This was written about a local black inventor for Black History Month.

lyrics

Mark Dean
lyrics and melody by Cat Faber 2019

His name’s Mark Dean, and he came from here
A black computer scientist and engineer
There are twenty patents in his name I swear
And he grew up right on the hill up there!

(chorus)
So take a note and remember still,
Maybe we should label it genius hill!
In Mark Dean’s honor, ‘cause it’s only fair
When he grew up right on the hill up there!

Back when segregation was the legal will,
He went to Nelson Merry at the top of the hill
He built a tractor just to have some fun,
On the hill up there, and he wasn’t done!

In Jefferson High, when integration went through
He was a straight A student and an athlete too,
At UT engineering, he did not just pass
He graduated at the top of his class!

He helped invent with his scholarship,
The personal computer and the gigahertz chip,
He’s an IBM fellow and you’ll find his name
In the National Inventors’ Hall of Fame.
