about

T. Kingfisher's new novella "What Feasts At Night" mentions a song called "Silver, Clay and Frost" about the aftermath of war. This is one attempt to envision what such a song might be like. Where it is unfaithful to the original concept it is undoubtedly because of my faulty grasp of Gallacian--a notoriously difficult language for one not born to it ;-)

These are living room carpet recordings; to change the balance of voice and mandolin I had to re-record the whole thing, so if this sounds different from yesterday's version, it is!

lyrics

At the battle’s end we found
When we stood to count the cost
Blood upon the barren ground—

Silver, clay, and frost

As if in grief for hearts that tore,
By autumn storms the trees are tossed
We know the wages born of war;
Silver, clay, and frost

The flower of our youth lie dead
White-haired parents mourn the lost
Fields unplanted, vows unsaid—
Silver, clay, and frost.

And when the stones so bare and bleak
With time and rain grow worn and mossed
Only these are left to speak--
Silver, clay and frost.
